WEST COLUMBIA – Mrs. Dorothy Alberta Downes was born the oldest child of Edith and William Pemberton on November 29, 1930 in New York, NY. She departed this life on August 12, 2018 at the Lexington Medical Center after a brief illness.
Dorothy graduated from Central Commercial High School in New York City. After relocating to Florida she became a member of St. Mary of the Angels Episcopal Church in Orlando. Prior to moving to South Carolina she was an active member of the Coalition for Barbados Association of Central Florida and Daughters of the King.
Dorothy was involved with many activities, sewing, crocheting, and traveling. Her passion was working with the electoral process in both New York and Orlando.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Downes, her only brother, David and both sons-in-law, Cleveland Blackwell and Timothy Rainey. She leaves to cherish her fond memories; daughters, Elaine Blackwell of Lithonia, GA and Patricia Rainey of West Columbia, SC; four grandchildren, Tyrone (Tiffany) Blackwell of Norcross, GA, Jason (Stacy) of Conyers, GA, Dana Bradley and Royce Rainey of West Columbia, SC; six great-grandchildren, Gabriel, ALannah, Dayton, Dalton and Dylaw; two nieces, Debra Morgan of Newark, NJ, Germaine Ramsey of Orlando, Florida; Goddaughter, Constance Joyce, and a host of cousins and friends.
