

Dot was a 1952 graduate of Parker High School. She spent a lifetime creating a beautiful home and being a loving mother, grammy, sister, aunt, and friend to many. She was a member of Virginia Wingard United Methodist Church where she maintained the prayer garden and volunteered in many areas to serve the church. She was also active in her neighborhood and gardening club.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Patti and Tom Carson of Lake Hartwell, South Carolina; her two grandchildren, which she was very proud of, Turner Blair Carson of Oklahoma City, OK and Jayna Kay Carson of Anderson, SC; her loving sister, Martha Shirley McMillian of Easley, SC; her nephew Dicky Shirley and his wife, Karen; her niece, Terri Shirley Hughes who were all like her children; great nephews, who she considered grandchildren, Jimmy Hughes, Zackary and Amanda Hughes, Justin and Kenleigh Hughes; and special great grandchildren, Audry Hughes, Teddy Hughes and Bennett Ann Hughes.
Services for Dot Thornton will be held at Virginia Wingard United Methodist Church, 1500 Broad River Road, Columbia, SC 29210 on Tuesday July 11, 2023. The family will receive friends in the sanctuary at 10:00 am. The Celebration of Life service will immediately follow at 11:00 am. Dot will be buried at Woodlawn Memorial Park located at 1901 Wade Hampton Boulevard, Greenville, SC 29615. Her graveside service will be on Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at 3:00 pm. The family will greet guests immediately following the service in the Chapel.
