

Dr. Elizabeth Ann Miller Johnson, affectionately known as Betsy, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family. She was born on January 28, 1952, in Toledo, Ohio, and was adopted by her loving parents, Gladys Beatty and Howard Lee Miller.
Betsy was raised in Aiken, South Carolina, where she graduated from Aiken High School. She pursued higher education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. She later obtained a Master of Education from the University of South Carolina. Demonstrating her lifelong commitment to learning, Dr. Johnson achieved a significant personal milestone at the age of 63 by earning her Doctor of Philosophy from Mercer University’s Atlanta Campus.
Betsy’s personal interests reflected her creativity and attention to detail. She was an accomplished cross-stitcher, an avid antique collector, enjoyed participating with her church handbell choir and was a devoted reader. She also took great joy in arranging floral displays for her church altar, a contribution that brought beauty and warmth to her church family.
She is survived by her two children, Shannon Tallent (Cory) and David Evan Johnson (McKenzie); four grandchildren, Ellie, Abbey Rose, Lyla and Carter; and her brother, Rev. William Miller-Zurell (Mary).
Dr. Elizabeth Ann Miller Johnson will be remembered for her intellectual curiosity, her devotion to family, and her contributions to her community and church. Her legacy will continue through the lives of those she touched.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 10, 2025, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home in Lexington, South Carolina. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m., followed by the service at 3:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association in Betsy’s honor.
