Esther Williams Johnston, age 96, of Irmo, South Carolina, passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, at Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community. She was born on October 16, 1927, to the late Susie Martha Clark Williams and James Daniel Williams.
The life of Esther was focused on her love and care for her family – her beloved husband H.P., her three daughters and their children, and all the grands and great-grands, as well as extended family members and friends. She never let anyone leave her house without a home-cooked meal that included desserts, such as her famous lemon pound cake. She also had unique talents of making beautiful creations from her sewing and crocheting. There was always a project to be completed. As a woman of faith and a member of Riverland Hills Baptist Church, Esther enjoyed her Sunday School Class, her Bible Study group (Oasis), and the ladies at Anna’s Tea. What an inspiration she was to all who were privileged to be a part of her life!
She is survived by her daughters, Sylvia Johnston Clyburn, Barbara Esther Johnston, and Phyllis Johnston Maier (Charles); sisters, Kathleen Williams Johnston and Mary Ann Williams; brothers, James Daniel Williams, Jr. and Burnett Rhett Williams (Becky); grandchildren: William Porter Tiller (Lisa), Jennifer Clyburn McMaster, Phillip Warren Clapp (Josie), Ashley Esthel Kirchner, Charles Albert Maier, Jr., Christopher Chadwick Maier, and Megan Maier Hamilton; step-grandchildren, Michael Douglas Clyburn (Diane), Robert Douglas Clyburn (Jessie), and Brian David Clyburn (Stephanie); as well as thirteen great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, one step great-grandson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her stepmother, Minnie Way Williams; son-in-law, Ted Clyburn; brother-in-law, Sam Johnston; and sister-in-law, Betty Williams.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, August 2, 2024, at Riverland Hills Baptist Church, 201 Lake Murray Blvd., Irmo, SC 29063. A private entombment will be held prior to the service.
