LEXINGTON - Florence “Tots” Griffin Cromer passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 25, after a brief illness. Born in Union County, NC, she was a daughter of Raymond Charles and Viola Warren Griffin. She graduated from Spartanburg General Hospital School of Nursing in 1954 and was employed by the State of South Carolina for more than 32 years. Prior to her retirement in 1990, she was a Director of Nursing at the William S Hall Psychiatric Institute, where she was selected Outstanding Employee, 1984, and Outstanding Nurse, 1988.
She was an American Red Cross Nurse and a Red Cross Disaster Services Volunteer, Central SC Chapter, where she received a special citation for Exceptional Volunteer Service. She was a member of the Granby Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and served as Chapter Regent. In 1995, she worked diligently to reactivate the Lexington Chapter, United Daughters of The Confederacy, becoming a charter member and serving as Chapter Registrar. She also served as Secretary, Ridge District UDC. She was an avid student of genealogy and compiled a family history, “Branches of Our Family Tree”, which was presented to family members. In 1984 she completed the Reserve Officer Training Program with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department. As much as she enjoyed all these things, the most important part of her life was always her family which she held very dear.

To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived; this is to have succeeded. Ralph Waldo Emerson
