Frances McCarthy Smith

Frances grew up in Lexington, SC, and graduated from Lexington Schools. She worked at Roof's Basket Factory and was a devoted mother and grandmother. Frances was the daughter of the late Austin and Ida McCarthy. In 1947, she married Paul H. Smith, with whom she shared a long and happy life until his passing.

She is survived by her son, Larry Smith (Helen); daughters, Shirley Smith (Gerald), Jeanette Hayes (James), Nancy Watson (Harry), and Brenda Snyder (Bill); and daughter-in-law, June Smith. Frances is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Paul H. Smith; her son, Wayne Smith; and her brothers, Paul O. and Victor McCarthy.

Frances had a passion for cake decorating and baking, gardening, cross-stitching, crocheting, and traveling to the beach and mountains. She also enjoyed puzzles and word searches. A life member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church, she was deeply involved in her community.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM on Sunday, January 18, 2026 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home - Lexington, 503 North Lake Drive, Lexington, SC 29072. A funeral service will occur at 1:00 PM on Monday, January 19, 2026 at St. Matthews Lutheran Church, 1273 Calks Ferry Rd, Lexington, SC 29072. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery.

The family would like to express their gratitude to VIA Hospice Care, and also to Bonnie Kyzer and Lauri Craps for their loving care. They also extend thanks to all who called and visited during this time.
