HINESVILLE, GA. - MSG (Ret.) Gene Lamar Whitaker, Sr., 64, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at Savannah Hospice Care, Savannah GA. Born July 2, 1949 in Columbia, he was a son of 1SG (Ret) Louie W. & Thelma Lindler Whitaker of Chapin. He was veteran of the Vietnam War and retired from the US Army in 1988. Gene proudly served his country in Germany, Okinawa, Korea and several stateside assignments. After retirement, Gene continued to serve by training soldiers worldwide on new equipment entering the Army's inventory for over 20 years. He was a Master Instructor and Fielding Chief for a number of Department of Defense contractors.
In addition to his parents, Gene is survived by his wife, Hwa Sun, of Hinesville, GA; daughter and son-in-law Susan and DJ Sa, of Cumming, GA; sons and daughters-in-law James L. and Stormy Whitaker of Savannah, GA, Gene L. Jr. and Catherine Whitaker of Marietta, GA; one grandchild, Cindy, and a step-grandchild, Zander, both of Savannah, brother, MSG (Ret.) Donald (Pam) Whitaker of Pomaria; sister, Karen (Les) Sutphin of Columbia; sister-in-law Jackie Whitaker of Columbia, and many loving nieces and nephews. Gene was predeceased by his brother CPO (Ret.) Alvin L. Whitaker.
Services for MSG Whitaker will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home Lexington Chapel, Lexington, SC, conducted by Pastor Dale Gooding. Burial with full military honors will follow at St. Jacobs Lutheran Church cemetery, Chapin. Active pallbearers will be United States Army Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, September 6, 2013 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Memorials may be made to The Wounded Warrior Project, P.O.
