On October 19, 2021, James R. Berens passed away due to natural causes. He was born in Massillon, Ohio on November 27, 1930 to Marie (Hamel) Berens and Casper C. Berens. He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Mary Jo (Hatheway) Berens and his brother, Kenneth Berens. Jim was reared in Massillon, Ohio and graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering with the Class of 1953.
He is survived by his five children, Regina M. Berens, Paul J. Berens and his spouse Korrie, Ann E. Gorman, MD and her spouse Jerome, Thomas C. Berens and his spouse Nancy, and John C. Berens and his spouse Leslie. He has 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Jim was always very supportive of his children and instilled in them the importance of education and a strong work ethic.
Jim spent most of his career in steel manufacturing with Republic Steel. He and Mary Jo retired to North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where they enjoyed golfing at the Surf Golf and Beach Club, visiting their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, playing bridge, and reading.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Lexington, South Carolina at 11:00 AM on October 29. Inurnment in the columbarium will follow immediately. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lutheran Hospice, 102 Fortress Dr., Chapin, SC 29036.
