James Gary Black, II, West Columbia, SC, age 88, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 10, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born in Conway, SC, he was the son of Richard Eugene Black and Rebecca Tedder Black.
Gary will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather. He found great joy in playing golf, birdwatching, and traveling, and took great pride in maintaining his beautiful yard. He had a sense of humor, and the gift of storytelling. He treasured memories he created with family and friends.
Gary graduated from Beaufort High School and Newberry College. He served in the Army National Guard for six years and retired after 30 years at SCANA as Assistant Treasurer. He was also an active member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church. Gary served as past president of the Cayce–West Columbia Lions Club, was a member of the Cayce-West Columbia Chamber of Commerce and Past President and charter member of the Cash Management Association of SC.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Kay Hook Black; children, Rebecca Fingerlin (Francis) and Jonathan Black (Tara); grandchildren, Adam Fingerlin, Claire Fingerlin, Jacob Black (Haley), Jarrett Black (Madison), and Ansley Black.
Gary was predeceased by his parents, and his brother, Lt. Col. Richard Black (U.S. Army, Ret.).
Visitation will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday July 13, 2026, at Our Saviour Lutheran Church, 1500 Sunset Boulevard, West Columbia, SC 29169, with a Memorial Service to follow at 3:00 pm. Memorials may be made to Our Saviour Lutheran Church.
