Mr. Land was born April 2, 1928 in Anderson, SC and passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2013. He was a son of the late Maurice Land and Marie Stacy Land. Mr. Land was a member of Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church. He was an electrical engineer with Southern Bell, Bell South and AT&T. Mr. Land completed his education at the University of South Carolina in 3 years. He was a founding member of Tau Beta Phi, the honorary engineering society and a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. He was also a Life Member of the AT&T Pioneers. Southern Bell loaned Jim to Atlanta’s High Museum of Art to oversee its planning and construction. Upon retirement he was the owner’s representative to assist and advise the construction of Fernbank Museum of Natural History and the Atlanta History Center of the Atlanta Historical Society.
Jim had numerous interests and talents, woodworking being the one he enjoyed most. While serving as project manager for Parkway Baptist Church, Duluth, GA he used the gifts God gave him to construct the baptistery cross, the choir rail and altar.
Upon their return to South Carolina, Jim served on the Lexington Arts Counsel. They also found a second home at Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church where Jim continued to help in a building program. He served on the Finance Committee and as a Trustee and on the Music Advisory Committee. Jim was grateful for God’s gift of the use of his hands and being able to utilize that gift to turn others toward Christ.
The loves of his life were his Lord and Savior; his wife, Carolyn and his family and friends. Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Nungezer Land; sister, Madge Land DuPre of Columbia; step daughter, Cary Eleazer White (Ray); step son, Robert Bobo (Linda) of Berkeley Lake, GA; grandchildren, Melissa B.
