James H. Zorn

LEXINGTON – A memorial service for James H. “Hal” Zorn, Jr., 70, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday May 9, 2014 at Holland Avenue Baptist Church, 801 twelfth Street, Cayce, SC with Rev. Andy Hunter officiating and Rev. Ken Harmon and Rev. Charles Wilson assisting. The family will receive friends after the service at the church.

Mr. Zorn was born August 26, 1943 in Orangeburg, SC and passed away on Monday, May 5, 2014. He was a son of the late James Harold Zorn, Sr. and Lila Ruth Barton Zorn. Mr. Zorn served as Executive Director of the South Carolina Dental Association retiring in 2009. He served as the governmental affairs editor and award winning writer for the Piedmont newspaper in Greenville and the State newspaper in Columbia. For 11 years, Mr. Zorn was the Administrator of Bamberg County. He also served as Director of Administrative Services for the National Council of Engineering Examiners.

He served as a deacon at Augusta Heights Baptist Church in Greenville and Holland Avenue Baptist Church in Cayce. He and his wife worked for more than a decade in the Holland Avenue church library and Mr. Zorn served on several of the church’s committees.

Mr. Zorn is survived by his wife of 50 years, Beverly R. Zorn of the home; a daughter, Elizabeth Lambert (Dan) of Herndon, VA; a son, William Zorn (Elisangela) of Lexington; a sister, Virginia Fralick (Bobby) of Summerville, SC; a brother, Mike Brown (Faye) of Bamberg, SC; a sister-in-law, Shirley Brown of James Island, SC ; and five grandchildren, Sam and Emmy Lambert of Herndon, VA and Samara, Sasha and Brittney Zorn of Lexington.

During his work career, Mr. Zorn was recognized as a recipient of the Order of the Silver Crescent and an honorary Doctoral Degree from the Medical University of South Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Medical University of South Carolina, James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine, 18 Bee Street, MSC 450, Charleston, SC 29435.
