

LEXINGTON – A Celebration of Life for Jimmy Levern “Jim” Brown, 68, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 19, 2015 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel with interment in Celestial Memorial Gardens, West Columbia. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service in the Chapel. The Rev. Dr. John L. Sharpe, III will conduct the services. Pallbearers will be James M. Grahl, Kenneth L. Adams, III, James W. Paog, Worth C. Rogers, Craig White, Johnny Odom and Kit Boan. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of Bull-Red Man Golf Classic, 2015.
Jim was the beloved husband of 48 years of Elaine Derrick Brown. He died suddenly Friday, January 16, 2015. He was the son of the late, Shelton Brown and Winnie McCutcheon Brown. Born in Lake City, SC on December 23, 1946, he was a 1965 graduate of Brookland Cayce High School; a 1972 graduate of USC School of Business. Mr. Brown did post graduate work at Aetna Home Office School in Hartford, Connecticut. Holding various insurance financial and real estate certifications, he was owner of Sheldon Brown Agency, Inc. for 25 years until his retirement. Jim stayed active in the insurance industry helping Ward Services, Inc. of Columbia provide employee benefits to school districts and businesses throughout South Carolina. Past President of the AAISC, he was a consumer advocate for insurance reform before legislative committees and the governor”s office.
Mr. Brown was a member and 32nd Master Mason of Sinclair Lodge, AFM 154, West Columbia and Jamil Temple, Columbia, SC, A member of Brookland United Methodist Church, he served over the years on various committees and sang in the chancel choir. During the Vietnam War, Mr. Brown served in the Naval Reserves and was stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. He remained active in the reserves for 6 years after returning to the States. Jim enjoyed all water related activities, boating, skiing and both fresh and saltwater fishing. Golfing was a passion and spent his final moments on the 5th fairway of Heathland Course at Legends, Myrtle Beach, participating in the annual Bull-Red Man Classic Tournament of 2015. He was a private pilot and enjoyed trips throughout the southeast.
Surviving are wife, Elaine Derrick Brown of Lexington; sister, Carolyn M. White (Johnny) of Florence; nephews, Jay White of West Columbia, J. Craig White (Dawn) of Florence, Hal Derrick of West Columbia (Sue Ann) and Robert W. Derrick; great nephew, Nicholas L. Derrick (Robin) of West Columbia; canine children, Bella Grace and Buddy; niece, Claudia White of West Columbia and several great nephews; god sons, Dr. Kevin Mewborn of Simpsonville and Michael M. Mewborn of Chapin, SC.
