Joan’s early working life began at Grice’s Market where she was expert at making fruit baskets in the family owned business. She retired from Southern Bell Telephone Company at the onset of her marriage to Claude C. “Sonny” Beckham (26 years). During this time they founded Beckham’s Barn Rock and Gem Shop in Irmo, SC. Joan excelled not only as a small business owner, but as a Jewelry Maker and Lapidary. Her wealth of knowledge in this area was immeasurable and irreplaceable.
Joan’s life was filled with wonderful travel opportunities that took her to multiple continents, as well as much of the United States. When at home, she worked to become a master gardner and lovingly nurtured her beautiful yard, while sharing her plant passions with others. Her many pets, both canine and feline, benefited from her loving and generous nature.
Joan is survived by her brothers and sisters: Leon (Cindy) Enlow, Larry (Betty) Enlow, Eleanor E. Ford, Juanita (Wayne) Duvall, Richard Enlow, Laney Enlow, Harriett (John) Berzins, Janice (Robert) Padowicz, Gwen Gantt, Alice (Bernie) Clegg, and Laura (Michael) Decker; as well as 29 nieces and nephews, and friend and co-worker, Elizabeth McCormick.
