Joe grew up in Columbia where he attended Eau Claire High School and was a proud graduate of the University of South Carolina with a degree in Finance. He opened several branches of C&S Bank as Branch Manager and was Assistant Vice President of the Lexington branch until his retirement. He was active in many civic, professional and community organizations. Joe had a passion for music and was the drummer for many bands, playing locally and along the South Carolina coast. He served his country as a Military Policeman in the Army National Guard for six years. Joe was a Shriner and a member of the Scottish Rite. He enjoyed being a member of the Jamil Temple Oriental Band, marching in many parades over the years.
Along with his parents, Joe was predeceased by his dear brother, Kerry Michael Payne. He is survived by his daughters, Dale (Rob) Maxwell, Ashley Redman and son, Joe W. Payne III; grandchildren, Chris (Caleigh), Chase and Reid Maxwell, Jenna and Baylee Redman; great grandson, Slater Maxwell; sister, Sharon (Woody) Kaminer; nieces, Marti Faglie, Laurie (Brad) Grooms and Maria (Curtis) Fink; nephew, Michael Payne; sister-in-law, Kathy Payne.
Known for his sense of humor and quick wit, along with his love for God, country, his Carolina Gamecocks, and especially his love for his family, Joe will be missed.
A celebration of life service will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, 503 N. Lake Dr., Lexington, SC 29072.
