It is with much sadness that I learned of John's death.  I first met John upon entering government service at Langley Air Force Base in the late 1970's, having come from South Carolina.  Given his and Martha's connections we established an immediate and fast friendship - we had common acquaintances and familiarity of places that fed that grand southern tradition of story-telling.  Though I moved on to the Washington area soon after we kept in constant touch and occasionally visited in the subsequent decades.  John's kindness, generosity, and greatness as a man were manifest throughout.  I am privileged to have known him and called him "friend."  God's peace.
