Josefina “Josie” Bacani Valentine passed away peacefully on Saturday afternoon in Lexington, South Carolina, surrounded by her family. Her favorite song was “You Are My Sunshine,” and her loved ones sang it softly to her as she took her final breath—just as she had brought warmth and light to so many hearts throughout her life.
Josie was born in Jalung, Porac, Pampanga, Philippines, to Maria Malit Bacani and Felix Bacani. She was one of seven children—Resurreccion (deceased), Lourdes, Rogelio, Herminia, Irene, and Fernando (deceased)—and carried the love of her family and homeland with her always.
She made her home in Ladson, South Carolina, where she shared 44 devoted years of marriage with her late husband, William Valentine. She is survived by her son Robert Burrell Valentine and grandson Trevor Burrell Valentine, her daughter Jane Ann Valentine and son-in-law Sung Lee. Josie remained deeply close to her beloved family in the United States, Canada, and the Philippines, keeping their bonds strong through letters, long calls, care packages, and endless love.
A compassionate caregiver, Josie worked for many years as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Lifecare of Charleston, where she was honored as an award-winning professional known for her patience, generosity, and gentle humor. Her devotion to others was not just her vocation—it was her gift.
At home, Josie found joy in gardening, cooking, sewing, and crocheting, filling every corner of her life with color and care. No one ever left her home without being offered something to eat and something to take home. She was the truest embodiment of welcome and love.
Josie will be remembered for her radiant smile, quiet strength, and boundless generosity. She was, and will always be, her family’s sunshine.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Josie’s caregivers and hospice team for their compassion and gentle care, and to her beloved dog, Sally, whose faithful companionship brought her comfort and joy every day.
A viewing will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 21, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home in Lexington, South Carolina. Friends and loved ones are invited to share memories, photos, and messages of condolence on the Caughman-Harman Funeral Home website, where Josie’s light and love will continue to be celebrated.
