Joyce Emalyn Thompson Bumgarner

Joyce married John Mack Bumgarner, Jr. on March 21, 1970, and together they built a loving life and family in Lexington, South Carolina. They shared nearly 54 years of marriage until John’s passing in February 2024.

Joyce is survived by her two children, James Allen Bumgarner and his wife, Jenny Hobbs Bumgarner, and Julie Bumgarner Mentnech and her husband, Phillip John Mentnech; her four grandchildren, Lukas Dean Mentnech, Michael Rhett Mentnech, Sally Grace Bumgarner, and James Wesley Bumgarner; her sister, Janice Thompson Bethea; her nephew-in-law, Scott Moody; and her grandniece and grandnephew, Elizabeth Moody and Marshall Moody.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Mack Bumgarner, Jr.; her parents, Howard Trimmier Thompson and Ethel LeMaster Thompson; and her niece, Lynn Luckey Moody.

Joyce graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1965 and Columbia College in 1969. A proud Columbia College alumna, she remained connected to and supportive of her alma mater throughout her life. She was especially proud to support the Class of 1969 Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance to future generations of Columbia College students.

A dedicated educator, Joyce spent 26 years teaching and touching the lives of countless children, beginning her career with three years in Lexington School District Two and continuing for 23 years in Lexington School District One. Her commitment to children and education extended far beyond the classroom.

Joyce was a longtime and active member of Lexington United Methodist Church, where her faith and her desire to serve others were important parts of her life. She was a member of the Delos Corderman Class and a devoted member of the Susanna Wesley Circle, where she supported many meaningful missions and outreach efforts over the years. Throughout her years at Lexington United Methodist, Joyce also served her church in numerous capacities and on various committees, always willing to give her time wherever it was needed.

Joyce had a true servant’s heart and was always willing to lend a hand to neighbors, friends, and others in her community. A wonderful baker and cook, she was often the first to volunteer to bring a cake, casserole, or homemade dish to someone in need. She generously shared her time and talents with others, and caring for those around her was simply part of who she was.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 29, from 10:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Lexington United Methodist Church, 309 E Main Street, Lexington, SC 29072. A service celebrating Joyce’s life will follow at 12:00 p.m. at the church. A private family burial will take place afterward.
