He leaves behind his wife of 32 years, Joyce Smith Hayes; son, Zach Hayes of Helen, GA; stepsons, Brent Caley (Kim) of Lexington, Guy Caley (Lisa), also of Lexington and grandchildren, Cassie Hayes, Jaden Hayes, Remington Caley, Hannah Caley, Sophie Caley, Eva Grace Caley, Sadie Caley and Emerson Caley.
Mr. Hayes graduated from North Georgia College in 1968. He then served in the U.S. Army Medical Services Corp with his last duty in MASH Hospital, Republic of Vietnam. Following this rotation, he pursued postgraduate work at the Medical College of Georgia, and completed his medical degree at the University of Georgia in 1981. His residency and fellowship in neurology were completed in 1986 at the same college in Augusta, GA.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 14, 2021 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Masks should be worn during visitation. Private services will be held at a later time.
