

LaVerne graduated from Austin High School in Chicago and later from Northern Illinois University with a degree in elementary education. She taught kindergarten through second grade at various schools in the Chicago area before retiring having served over 20 years in the Chicago area, culminating with her service in the Center Cass School district in Downers Grove. She was well loved by her students, many of whom kept up with her on Facebook throughout her life. While residing in Illinois, she served on the library board in her home town of Westmont. Later, after moving to Clemmons, NC, she was an active member of her garden club, the YMCA and quilting group. There she attended St Clement's Episcopal church, where she found a welcoming church family. Upon moving to Lexington, SC, LaVerne continued to avidly quilt, attend water aerobics, and take crafting classes at the Shepherd's center.
She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Wayne Kempf, her daughters Lisa Maylath (Craig, Madeleine, Paige) and Kim Stojkovich (Goran, Sasha, Luka), and her son Kevin Kempf (Lisa, Ryan, Nathan).
She was predeceased by her mother Marie, father Adam, sister Marjorie Munday, and niece Michelle.
A church service will be held locally at Thanksgiving followed by the interment of the ashes. Details to follow.
