

CHAPIN – Margaret V. Sikkema, age 87, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 26, 2015. She was born on June 13, 1928 in Paterson, NJ to Julius and Carrie Vroon. She graduated from Eastern Christian High School in Prospect Park, NJ, and worked as a secretary for several years. In July 1948, she married Forrest J. Sikkema in the 2nd Christian Reformed Church in Prospect Park, NJ.
She is survived by her husband, Forrest J. Sikkema; her sons, Dennis (Joanne) Sikkema, Illinois, and Jay (Lawrie) Sikkema, Columbia, SC; sisters, Babe (James) DeRuiter, Carolyn Hagedorn; and grandchildren, Maggie Marsh, Savannah Marsh, Bryan (Rachel) Sikkema, and Brandi Sikkema. She was predeceased by her parents, Julius and Carrie Vroon, and daughter, Marilyn Marsh.
Forrest and Margaret moved to Miami, FL in 1969, where Margaret became very involved with Redlands Community Church. She was a volunteer secretary for eight years, and also served as a pianist and singer in the choir. She was also known for her counted cross-stitch work, of which many friends and family were recipients. After her husband’s retirement, she traveled with Forrest on mission trips around the world, including Haiti, West Africa, Peru, Holland, and Germany, where she either did secretary work or kitchen duties. They moved to South Carolina in 2006 to be near their children and grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. at Chapin Presbyterian Church, 600 Old Lexington Hwy, Chapin, SC 29036 on Sunday, January 3, 2016. Visitation with the family will be from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., before the service. The family wishes to thank Blue Ridge Hospice and especially Nurses Janet Rodgers and Carmella White for their loving care over the past year.
