Mary Dozier Ellsworth, of Lexington, South Carolina passed away on Tuesday, May 16, 2023. She was born in Sumter, SC on September 13, 1947. She was the daughter of John Dozier Lee, Jr. and Betty McFaddin Burgess Lee.
She graduated from Edmunds High School in Sumter, SC in 1965. After attending Queens College for two years, she transferred to the University of South Carolina and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1970. She served as president of her sorority, Alpha Delta Pi, and served on the Homecoming Committee and Student Council. She then earned her Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of South Carolina in 1973. She later earned her Master’s +30 and her National Board Certification.
She was a history and economics teacher for 38 years with Lexington School District One and a few prior years with another district. She was a member of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church. She was baptized at the Church of the Holy Comforter in Sumter, SC. She was a lifelong member of Lexington Women’s Club and a founding (charter) member of the Lexington Cotillion. She was president of both these clubs along with holding several different positions within both. She was also a member of Lexington County Museum, Risky Business, Second Thursday Book Club, Alpha Delta Pi Housing Corporation and Alumnae Group, Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames, Huguenot Society of South Carolina and ADK.
She is preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Betty “Betsy” Burgess Lee Satory and John “Johnny” Dozier Lee, III. She is survived by her husband, John R. Ellsworth of Lexington; son, Ryan M. Ellsworth (Katie) of Greenville and daughter, Lindsay E. Sadler (Jamie) of Lexington; two grandchildren, Catherine and Betsy; brother-in-law, Carl A. Ellsworth (Gibbie) of Columbia; two nephews and a niece.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.
