

LEXINGTON - Funeral services for Mary Hook Rhoten “Ninny”, 89, will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 30, 2011 at Lexington United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ken Owens and Rev. Miyoung Paik officiating. Burial will follow in Southland Memorial Gardens, 700 Dunbar Rd., West Columbia, SC. Visitation will be Saturday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington.
Mary Rhoten passed away at home on Wednesday, October 26, 2011, surrounded by her family. She was born March 9, 1922 to the late Harvey Albert and Mary Eva Fry Hook in Red Bank, SC. She was the widow of James Thomas Rhoten, Sr. She is survived by her son, Carroll Timothy Rhoten (Margaret) and her daughter, Brenda Loretta Rhoten, and daughter-in-law, Linda Corley Rhoten, all of Lexington. She is also survived by her sister, Betty Hook Ray of Gilbert, SC. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Natalie Mashburn (Ken) of Cumming, GA, Regina Lewis (Steven) of Spartanburg, SC, Jason Hendrix (Rachel) of Minneapolis, MN, John Hendrix (Sharon), Chelsea Burbage (John), and Jeffrey Rhoten, all of Lexington. Other survivors are great-grandchildren, Mitchell, Olivia and Lauren Lewis, Caroline and Davis Hendrix, Jack and Charlie Mashburn, Preston Burbage, and many other loving family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her son, James “Jimmy” Thomas Rhoten, Jr., and her brother, Albert “Skinny” Hook, both of Lexington.
Mrs. Rhoten was a member of Lexington United Methodist Church and the Friendly Workers Circle. She loved her church and enjoyed fixing communion for many years. She was employed by Martel Mills (Lexington’s Old Mill) and The Wil Lou Gray Opportunity School. She was a member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. She was an avid reader and loved watching “Little House on the Prairie”. She always impressed others with her remarkable memory and sense of humor. She babysat in numerous churches and homes throughout Lexington. Her love for children and their love for her will always be remembered.
