
Mary Elizabeth “Mary Beth” Shane, age 82, passed away peacefully in her Lexington, South Carolina home, November 13, 2022, after a courageous, eight and a half year battle fighting stomach cancer. She was born February 25, 1940 in Oak Park, Illinois to Maurice and Betty Washburne. She was married to Charles Nicholas Shane, Jr. on April 16, 1966. They celebrated their 56th anniversary together earlier this year.
As a young adult, Mary Beth worked as a primary school teacher in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Washington, DC. She left this profession after she became a mother to her first born, Charles. She resumed her teaching profession as a special education teacher when she moved to Dayton, Ohio. She received her Bachelor’s in Education from the University of Dayton in 1979.
Mary Beth was passionately involved in politics in later years. She was a South Carolina Convention of States Representative and poll watcher. She was also involved extensively in her local communities. She was a member of the social communities when she resided in Naples, Florida and Lexington, South Carolina. She had a love for painting and has amassed a beautiful portfolio of landscapes and flowers. She also spent numerous hours crafting, sewing, playing tennis and cooking. She was always preparing meals or treats for family and friends.
She loved to travel. She made it a tradition to travel with the whole family on cruises to Alaska, Mexico, Bermuda, Hawaii and St. Thomas. She and her husband, Charles, had a timeshare at Disney in Florida, which they shared with family and friends for many years.
Mary Beth is survived by her devoted husband, Charles; her sister, Marian Quast and her three children, Charles Shane, Margaret Herron and Jennifer Penland. She was known as Grammie to grandchildren, Jack, Kate and Matt, Gammie to Brooke and Ashley, and Mimi to Dean, Shane and Libby.
A funeral service has been scheduled for Monday, November 28, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church located at 2350 Augusta Highway, Lexington, South Carolina. A Celebration of Life will follow the service at Lexington Villas Clubhouse. The celebration will begin at 1:00 p.m. Please join Mary Beth’s family to honor and remember her.
