Ollie “Sam” Grainger, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on October 20, 2026, at the age of 91, leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories and a family who will forever hold her close in their hearts.
Sam retired from the South Carolina Department of Transportation the moment she turned 62, ready to enjoy the things she loved most. She found happiness in life’s simple pleasures, especially growing beautiful flowers and watching the hummingbirds that visited the feeders scattered around her home.
She especially enjoyed fishing at the creek house and deer hunting in the Lowcountry alongside her beloved husband, Lavern Grainger. Those times together were treasured memories that remained dear to her heart.
After her husband’s passing, Sam continued to live life with determination and a spirit that kept her going strong. She enjoyed reading books, attending Happy Hearts at her church, and spending time with friends at the Leisure Center of Lexington. She was especially proud to share that she walked a mile on the treadmill and rode the stationary bike for 20 minutes every day. Her dedication to staying active was a testament to her determination, independence, and zest for life.
Sam’s life was a beautiful reminder that happiness is often found in the things we love, the people we cherish, and the routines that give our days meaning. Her love for her family, her enjoyment of nature, and her friendships brought her comfort and joy throughout her years.
She is survived by her daughter, Kelly Lovern (Mark) of Columbia, South Carolina; her son, Patrick Roper (Scarlett) of Independence, Louisiana; eight grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews who will carry her memory forward.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lavern Grainger; her son, Scott Roper; and her sister, Mary Sue Brown.
Sam’s long life was filled with love, treasured memories, and the quiet joys that made her who she was. Though she will be deeply missed, her memory will live on in the hearts of her family and all who knew and loved her.
Funeral services will be held at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 1273 Calks Ferry Road, Lexington, South Carolina, on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at 1:00 p.m.
