

WEST COLUMBIA – A funeral service for Raymond Corley Lown, age 96, of West Columbia, will be held at 2:00 pm on October 12, 2018 at St. David Lutheran Church, 132 St. Davids Church Road, West Columbia, SC. Raymond died October 8, 2018. The Rev. Glenn Boland will conduct the service. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service (1:00 to 2:00 pm) in the Commons Area of the church. Burial after the service will be in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to St. David Lutheran Church Endowment Fund.
Raymond was the son of the late Ardis Lawrence and Dessie Corley Lown. He was a graduate of Lexington High School. He was a lifetime member of St. David Lutheran Church. He served as a 6th grade Sunday school teacher for many years. He was a member of the David Sunday School Class, Tone Chimes, Young at Heart Group, St. David Senior Travelers, Lutheran Men in Mission, Committee of 100, past Adjutant of the American Legion Congaree Post 90 and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.
He attended the Columbia School for Aeronautics and served in the Navy aboard the USS Wingfield during World War II. His family was a 4-Star family, having all four Lown brothers in the Navy at the same time. He had the privilege of going on the WWII Veterans’ Freedom Flight on September 1, 2010 with his son, Larry, as his guardian. Raymond and his three brothers co-owned Lown Brothers Basket Factory, Lown Brothers Hardware, two Piggly Wiggly grocery stores, and Lown Town Shopping Center (all in West Columbia). All four brothers retired together in 1983.
Mr. Lown is survived by Virginia Kaminer Lown, his wife of 74 years; son, Larry Lown and his wife, Andrea, of West Columbia; daughter, Ramona Kyre and husband, Mark, of New Zealand; two grandchildren, Devlin Kyre of Winston-Salem, NC, Christen Reed and husband, Jason, of New Zealand and four great-grandchildren, Joshua and Nikolas Kyre of Winston-Salem, NC, and Cole and Amelia (“Mia”) Reed of New Zealand. He is also survived by sister, Sybil Quattlebaum and sister-in-law, Mary Lown. Mr. Lown was predeceased by daughter, Cheryl Lee Lown; sister, Emily Lown and granddaughter, Heather Rae Lown; brothers, Harold Lown (and wife, Margie), Leon Lown (and wife, Ruby), and Ervin Lown; sisters, Lorene Sox (and husband, R.W.), Velda Livingston (and husband, Al), Jewell Shull (and husband, Norman). He was also predeceased by brother-in-law, Robert Quattlebaum.
