His parents immigrated from Poland when they were teenagers. Growing up Bob was an altar boy and graduated from East Technical High School in 1945. He entered the Navy in 1945 during WW II and served on a supply ship in the Philippines.
He met Nancy Ann Goggin when they were in their early 20s. They were married in 1953 and were together for 54 years before she passed away in 2007. He took excellent care of Nancy Ann during her lengthy illness caring for her at their home.
Bob always had a strong desire to help people so he joined the Cleveland Ohio Fire Department in 1953 and rose to the rank of Captain before he retired in 1979 at the age of 52. While working in the fire department he always held two jobs. Throughout his life Bob worked at the post office, was an egg and shoe salesman, worked for Brinks Security, and as a dog groomer and roofer. He attended John Carroll and Kent State Universities and became a substitute teacher in the Cleveland Public School system.
After Bob retired from the Cleveland Fire Department, he and Nancy Ann traveled all over the United States with their travel trailer. In 1979, they decided to move to Hilton Head Island and became very active in the community. They spent winters in Fort Myers, Florida. Bob and Nancy Ann moved to Sun City, SC in 1997 where Bob was a founding member of the Oaktie Farmers Club.
Bob had many hobbies throughout his life, which included photography, astronomy, bird watching, coin and stamp collecting, exercising, fishing and tennis. But his favorite hobbies were playing his 1920 Gibson mandolin, wood carving and gardening. Bob played his mandolin with the Sun City Strummers. He also enjoyed playing the harmonica in his later years. He carved many intricate birds, animals, caricatures and jewelry. He was an excellent gardener and prided himself on growing his delicious tomatoes, green peppers, beans and eggplant. He retained his gardening, mandolin, and harmonica hobbies well into his 90's.
In 2013, Bob moved to Lexington, SC to be closer to family. Bob had a great sense of humor throughout his lifetime and was quite the jokester. He was a wonderful, caring, loving husband, father, grandfather, friend and all-round fantastic person who will be greatly missed.
