Robert P. Fitch, 87, died peacefully in Lexington, South Carolina on Thursday, August 10, 2023. He was the beloved son of the late Gladys and Harold Fitch; a loving brother of the late Frank (Shirley) Fitch; dear uncle of Peggy (Jonathan) Rubenstein and Mark Fitch; great uncle of Emily (Eric) Dropkin, Daniel (Emily Rus) Rubenstein, and Benjamin Rubenstein; and great-great uncle to Eloise Dropkin.
Robert was born in Bushnell, Illinois on January 5, 1936. He loved learning and was very well read. He attended Bushnell-Prairie City High School. He received his BA from Monmouth College followed by three Master’s degrees in library science fields from George Peabody College for Teachers, Indiana University, and the University of Pittsburgh.
Robert had a long career as a librarian at multiple institutions. In between getting his degrees, he served in the US Army. He loved to travel with his family and the Rotary Club. He was a great photographer and enjoyed sharing all of his adventures with everyone. He was a longtime member of the Columbia First Church of the Nazarene and a member of the Neely Friendship Sunday School Class.
A visitation for Robert will be held Sunday, August 13, 2023 from 1:30 PM to 2:00 PM at First Church of the Nazarene, 901 St. Andrews Road, Columbia, South Carolina 29210, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM.
