COLUMBIA - Funeral services for Dr. Robert Daniel Utsey, Sr. will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 8, 2017 at Union United Methodist Church in Irmo. The family will greet friends immediately following the service in the church.
Dr. Robert Daniel Utsey, Sr. died Saturday, September 30, 2017 at Agape Hospice House. He was born in St. George, SC, the son of Willis Kelly Utsey and Mary Etta Weathers Utsey. He was a graduate of St. George High School and Wofford College. After graduation, he spent a year as a physics instructor for The Army Air Corps who lived on the campus. He served in WW II in France and Germany in the 99th Chemical Mortar Battalion attached to the Seventh Army. After the war, he attended and graduated from Emory University School of Dentistry with a DDS degree.
After a brief practice of a year for the city of Ashville, NC, his family moved to Orangeburg, SC for private practice. Five years later, Dr. Utsey settled in West Columbia, SC. He was an active member of the West Columbia Lions Club and Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church where he served on the council and many other organizations. Before retiring, he spent 12 years as the first on-site dentist for the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Services. He was also a member of the South Carolina Dental Society, The American Dental Association and the Delta Sigma Delta Fraternity.
Bob had two passions: playing bridge in many clubs and teaching Sunday school in the Fellowship Sunday school class of Union United Methodist Church.
Dr. Utsey is predeceased by his wife, Peggy Bomar Utsey of Spartanburg, SC and his son, Robert “Bobby” Utsey, Jr. Survivors include his daughter, Sandra Ann Utsey Rhodes (Tommy) of Estill, SC; grandchildren, Scott Rhodes (Virginia) and their children, Jane and Kate, all of Brunson, SC; Dr. Shannan Rhodes Miller (Phillip) and their children, Nathan and Price, all of Barnwell, SC; Robin Ann Utsey of Columbia, SC, and her children, Chloe and Ryan, and Abby Leah Utsey Barlett of Easley, SC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Building Fund, Union United Methodist Church, PO Box 705, Irmo, SC, 29063; Wofford College, 429 N. Church St., Spartanburg, SC 29303 or to a charity of one’s choice.
