LEXINGTON – Florence Rosalyn Wingard Roof, age 91, passed away peacefully at Lexington Extended Care on Sunday, April 15, 2012. Born on October 20, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Elmer Eugene Wingard and the late Florence Lucille Corley Wingard of Lexington. She was married to the late Homer Livingston Baker Roof. She was a member of St. David Lutheran Church, the Young at Heart, Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and Oak Grove Civic Club. Rosalyn taught Vacation Bible School for many years, and she and Homer saw to it that their children were involved in the Weekday Church School, Sunday School, church children’s choirs and other Christian education activities. They instilled a love of the Lord in their children by surrounding them with other Christians and through daily family devotions. After graduating from the University of South Carolina, she spent her career years alternating between teaching fourth and seventh grades in Lexington School District One and piedmont Schools and staying home while each of her children was under the age of 5 to be a homemaker. She was a Marine Corps veteran who served during World War II. She loved working outside with plants and flowers in her younger and middle years and was an avid lifelong reader.
Rosalyn is survived by four children, Ronald Wingard Roof (Patricia) of Fort Mill, Dianne Roof Lyles (Marty) of Columbia, Patricia Roof Hood (Bucky) of West Columbia, and John Homer Roof of Gaston. She had 14 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren, and a number of special nieces and nephews. Also surviving are three brothers, Elmer Eugene Wingard, Jr. of Deland, Florida, Roy David Wingard and Theodore Kistler Wingard, both of Lexington. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Dorothy Wingard George, Helen Elizabeth Wingard, and Christine Wingard Roberts.
The family will receive friends at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, on Wednesday, April 18, 2012, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A service will be held at St. David Lutheran Church, West Columbia, on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at 11:00 a.m., officiated by the Reverend James Laurence and Vicar Greg Brown.
