Stephen B Casey

LEXINGTON - Stephen Bryan Casey, age 90, of Lexington passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, September 30, 2012. He was born the son of the late Roosevelt and Virginia Casey in Jane Lew, West Virginia on September 17, 1922.

He was a career officer in the United States Army, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before retirement in 1967. His distinguished career includes fighting with the 82nd Airborne, 505th regiment during WW II, combat during the Korean War and then stationed at Fort Bragg where he co-wrote the jump school training manuals. Next at the Pentagon he served as an assistant to the Joint Chiefs of Staff under President Kennedy, and later given an assignment to the American Embassy in Saigon as the Army Liaison to Ambassador H. Lodge during the Vietnam War. His last tour of duty was at the Presidio in San Francisco, CA.

He was awarded several commendations, most notably the Bronze Star and the Dutch Lanyard, awarded for the liberation of the Netherlands.

He was a Shriner and a 32 Degree Free Mason, Winyah Lodge No. 40.

He is remembered by his family for his unwavering sense of humor, and for the traits that he valued most in life – honesty, integrity, and loyalty.

He is survived by his daughter, Kathleen Miller (Michael) of Spartanburg, SC; niece, Charmine Ray of Georgetown, SC; granddaughters, Erin Black (Collin) of Chattanooga, TN and Laura Casey of Johnson City, TN; brother, Robert Casey of North Carolina; daughter-in-law, Joyce Casey of Chattanooga, TN and many other loving extended family members.

He is preceded in death by his wife of nearly 65 years Carrie Casey, son, Stephen B. Casey, II and brother, James Casey.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. at Lexington United Methodist Church followed by a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. Burial services and inurnment of his wife’s cremains will take place in the Fort Jackson National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m.
