Derek loved the outdoors, camping, fishing, hiking, and traveling. A lover of all things historical, including searching for artifacts and visiting various museums on his travels. He was compassionate, tender hearted, and had a deep love for his family and friends.
He is survived by his cherished daughter, Hayden Sophia Grooms; brother and sister-in-law, Tyler and Briana Grooms; nephews, Daniel, Jay, and Reese; grandparents, Barbara J. Hooker, Ervin “Bud” Hooker, Ken and Kitty Fasching, and Charles and Katherine Grooms. He is also survived by his aunts and uncles, Debi Hooker, Sheri McElyea (David), Suzanne Christie (Carl), Michelle Sarokas (Jeff), Melvin Grooms (Wendy), Carol Ann Knoche (David), and many cousins, who he loved like siblings.
Although Derek’s life may have been cut short, he touched the hearts of many while he was with us. He will be missed by those who loved him the most, including his family, friends, and his dog River.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 11, 2021 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel.
