Steve was born March 25, 1949 in Salisbury, NC. Steve was the son of Andrew Spencer Kennedy, Jr. and the late Hazel Louise Kennedy. Steve was predeceased by two brothers.
Over 30 years ago, Steve’s true friend and mentor, Joe White, received a random call from Steve’s mother informing him that her son was in Columbia homeless, no job and no place to live. She told Joe that someone had given her his number and wanted to know if Joe could possibly help him. At the time, Joe was Director of General Services with Lexington County. Joe said he could hear the hurt in Mrs. Kennedy’s voice and heart. Joe told Mrs. Kennedy to have Steve give him a call.
Steve did come to see Joe. Joe recognized that Steve would have a hard time finding a job. Joe did indeed help Steve by hiring him with the County in maintenance. Steve did work and retired after 28 years. Through the years, Joe never severed his relationship with Steve.
At the time of Steve’s retirement, realizing that Steve would not be able to live alone or handle his finances, Joe was responsible for getting him into Babcock Center.
Due to current circumstances, there will not be a service. Steve’s body will be placed at Bush River Memorial Gardens. He will be laid to rest in the same place Joe White’s body is.
Should anyone wish to express condolences, please direct them to Babcock Center, Inc., PO Box 4389, West Columbia, SC 29170.
Before Joe’s death, he expressed that special thanks be offered on his behalf for the tremendous work that Babcock Center does.
