
Stewart A. “Andy” Maurer passed away on February 4, 2022 at the age of 62. Andy lived a full and productive life despite being born with Prader-Willi Syndrome. He was a resident of the Babcock Center for over 25 years and was very involved, serving as a consumer member of the Board of Directors and the Human Rights Committee. He was one of the founding members and served as President several times of the BETA (BECOMING EMPOWERED THROUGH ADVOCACY) group at Babcock. Andy was featured in a 2005 People Magazine article about living with Prader-Willi Syndrome and also appeared on CNN and was interviewed by Dawndy Mercer Plank for WIS TV. In 2018, he received the Self Advocate of the Year award from the SCAAIDD. He served on the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association (USA) national advisory board for 14 years. He was an active Special Olympics athlete and represented South Carolina at the 2003 Special Olympics World Games in Dublin, Ireland in the equestrian events.
Andy is survived by his parents, Bronnie and Stewart Maurer of Greenwood, SC; his Aunt Ann and Uncle Fritz of Geneva, NY; his Uncle Don of Jackson, MI and four cousins.
Bronnie and Stewart wish to thank everyone at Babcock Center who knew and made Andy feel as if they were family. They are family! He loved them, as do his parents.
A celebration of Andy’s life will take place on Tuesday, February 15 at 2:00 p.m. at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel.
