

COLUMBIA – A service to celebrate the life of Vernon Lee Mayes, Jr., 68, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 11, 2015 at St. Andrews Baptist Church, 230 Bush River Rd., Columbia SC 29210 with interment in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at St. Andrews Baptist Church.
Mr. Mayes was born June 28, 1947 in Winnsboro, SC and passed away on Thursday, August 6, 2015 after a courageous battle against cancer. He was the son of the late Vernon Lee Mayes and Beulah Smith Mayes. Mr. Mayes was a U.S. Army Veteran having served his country during the Vietnam War. A retired Forrester, Mr. Mayes was an active member of St. Andrews Baptist Church where he served as deacon, president of his Sunday school class “Beau's Boys” and sang in sanctuary choir. Mr. Mayes had an Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and he was truly a southern gentleman! Mr Mayes was known for his loving generosity! His hobbies included yardwork, singing and music.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Donna Taylor Mayes of Columbia; sons, Brandon Lee Mayes of Columbia and Blake Aaron Mayes of Irmo; daughter-in-law, Ann Geddings Mayes of Irmo; granddaughters, Rylee Marie Mayes and Lawson Amber Mayes both of Irmo; sisters, Joyce Mayes Holmes and Judy Mayes Bonds both of Winnsboro and best friend his American Bulldog, Bella. He was predeceased by his parents.
