Obituary of Harry Roland "Jake" Campbell
Harry Roland “Jake” Campbell, 76, prominent Union County auctioneer and resident of West College Corner, died Sunday evening, May 19, 2013, at Reid Hospital, Richmond where he had been admitted for surgery. A Union County native, “Jake” was born August 6, 1936 to Harry J. and Tressa Younce Campbell. In 1954, he graduated from Union High School in College Corner where he was the class president. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. On November 28, 1959, he was married to the former Edna W. Watterson at the College Corner United Methodist Church. “Jake” graduated from the Missouri Auction School in 1961 and was a licensed auctioneer for 52 years. He also was a licensed Indiana Real Estate Appraiser and Broker. “Jake” began his career working for Harold Reisert Auction Service liquidating auto dealerships across the country. He established the Campbell Auction Business in Liberty and became the Campbell Auction Team in 1984 with the addition of his son, Mike. He was a member of the Indiana and Ohio Auctioneer Association, past president and past director of the Indiana Auctioneer Association and was past president of the Indiana Auctioneer Commission. “Jake” was a member of the Indiana Auctioneer Hall of Fame. “Jake” loved volunteering his time and service. He served on the Board of Directors of the Farmers’ State and First Financial Banks. For over 50 years, he volunteered at the Union County 4-H Livestock Auction, Ducks Unlimited for over 30 years and was a volunteer with the College Corner Fire Department. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a member of the American Legion. “Jake” was a member and past master of the Liberty Lodge #58, F.& A.M. and a member of Murat Shrine, Indianapolis. “Jake” never met a stranger and liked to golf and play cards. He most enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s activities and sporting events. “Jake” was known for his many quotes, including the Jake Campbell Guarantee, “when you hit the street and it breaks into two pieces, you own both pieces.” “Jake” is survived by his wife of over 53 years; three children and their spouses: Michael W Campbell and his wife, Cheryl of Eaton, Ohio; Deborah D. Richardson and Eric of West College Corner; Rhonda R. Soper and Steve of Liberty; his grandchildren: Danielle and Trey Campbell, Chalonda, Delanna, Erica and Travis Richardson, Tyler and Amber Soper; a great-granddaughter: Chloe Hoog; sister-in-law: JoAnn Kolb and her husband, Donn of Eaton, Ohio; brother-in-law: Jimmy Watterson of Liberty; cousins and many friends. In addition to his parents, “Jake” was preceded in death by his son: H. Roland Campbell who died in 2009 and his brother: John O. Campbell. Funeral services for “Jake” will be conducted at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Fosdick Chapel, Liberty, at 11 a.m. Saturday with Rev. Dana Hadden of the Hanna's Creek Christian Church officiating. Interment will follow in the Old Franklin Cemetery in Franklin County with military honors by the American Legion Post #122 and VFW Post #1472, both of Liberty. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday where memorial masonic services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to Liberty Lodge #58, F.& A.M., St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Shriners Hospital for Children, or charity of the donors’ choice.
