Betty was born in Liberty, MO on May 29th, 1937 to Lula and Elmer Oliver. She attended school through 8th grade, the highest grade they had at the time, before becoming a homemaker and babysitter. She married the love of her life, Vernon Serner, on November 4th, 1960 in Miami, Oklahoma. They went on to have four children, three of which survive: Brian, Angelina, and Scott. Sadly, Betty’s son Randy Lee Serner passed in 2013.
Betty enjoyed many things, including solving crossword puzzles and gardening. She was well-known for her love of plants, especially roses. When she wasn’t gardening, she enjoyed watching game shows and veterinary shows, such as “The Incredible Dr. Pol” and “Dr. Jeff: Rocky Mountain Vet.” Betty loved to cook for her family, and her cornbread dressing, biscuits and gravy, and chicken and dumplings will be sorely missed at future family meals.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Lula and Elmer; her loving husband, Vernon; her son, Randy Lee; all of her many siblings; and her beloved dog, Izzy Lou.
Betty is survived by her children, Brian Serner, Angelina “Angie” Serner-Casady, and Scott Allen Serner; as well as innumerable grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends, and family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Betty’s name to KC Pet Project, 7077 Elmwood Avenue, Kansas City, MO 64132, https://kcpetproject.org/donate/
