Delores Jean Hammond was born on January 9, 1959 in Kansas City, MO to Norval and Fannie Hammond. She accepted Christ at the age of 13. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Liberty before becoming an active member at Church of Christ in Liberty.
Delores received her education in the Liberty Public School system. She enjoyed playing sports. Delores played volleyball, basketball and ran track in high school and played softball in summer leagues.
Delores enjoyed spending time with family and friends, taking the little kids on outings, crafting, sewing, and creating things with her hands. Whether it was a pine cone, piece of Styrofoam, yarn, beads, a canvas, gel pens, leaves, or paint, Delores could make a masterpiece with almost any material.
After graduating from Liberty High School, Delores relocated to Salt Lake City, UT, where she worked as a seamstress in a sewing factory for 2 years. She then relocated to California, where she worked with mentally challenged children in their homes and in their workshops. Delores knew at the age of 14 that she wanted to work with mentally challenged children after having the opportunity to work as a counselor with a group of children at a youth summer camp.
Even though Delores always enjoyed braiding and styling hair as a side job since childhood, she finally decided to go to school so she could be licensed. She received her cosmetology license in 2000 from House of Heavilin in Kansas City, MO.
When Delores returned to MO in the late 1990’s, she became an active member of St. Luke’s African Methodist Episcopal Church – Liberty until the church was dissolved. She then started attending St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church until her passing.
Delores was diagnosed with a rare heart disease which resulted in her having to undergo a heart transplant in 2002. To celebrate St. Luke’s Hospital’s 1000 Transplant in 2023, Delores crafted a picture that is now hanging in the hallway of the hospital. She also made heart shaped pillows for other transplant patients to use after their surgeries.
Delores was preceded in death by her parents, Norval Sr. and Fannie, 3 brothers, Norval Jr., Marvin and Jephrie, and sister, Beatrice.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Monica Dixon-Garner; 6 precious grandchildren - Isaiah, Antione, Nylah, Eliese, Kylli, and Kar’eon; 2 great-grandchildren – Kamari and Amari; siblings - John Hammond (Linda) of Little Rock, AR, Pat Phillips (James) of Portland, OR, Lional Hammond (Cyndie) of Liberty, MO, Nathaniel Hammond (Lillie) of Lee’s Summit, MO, Charles Hammond (Linda) of Grandview, MO, Norma Hammond of Pleasant Valley, MO, Arnold Hammond of Liberty, MO, Doris Hammond of Kansas City, MO; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
