
Esther Fischer, of Liberty, MO passed away on Wednesday, January 10, 2018, at the age of 91 in Liberty Hospital under their Hospice care. She was born Esther Wittig in 1926 in Chester, NE. After high school in Johnson, NE, she attended Wartburg College in Waverly, IA on a scholarship and graduated with a teaching degree. The family moved to Colorado Springs, CO in 1944 and there met her husband, Don Fischer, at a church picnic. He was stationed at Camp Carson Army Base for training. In October of 1947, Don and Esther were married and later moved to Liberty where they made their home. They opened a flower shop, Fischer’s Flowers, in downtown Liberty, and operated the business for 30 years. Esther was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Liberty, and served as a Sunday school teacher, and Elder. She organized the 55 Plus group in 1990. She’s a past president of the Liberty Hills Women’s Association, and P.E.O. Chapters IZ and LH. She served as president of the P.T.A. and the Carousel Dance Club. Esther was also active in Girl Scouts in her daughters’ troops, and served 2 years as Day Camp Director. Esther was preceded in death by her parents Albert and Lydia, husband Don, brother’s Leonard and Lawrence Wittig, and sister Allene (Wittig) Yancey. She is survived by her brother Milton (Jeanine) Wittig, Rockwall, TX, daughters Claudia (Tim) Bennett of Mountain View, AR and Barbara (Mike) Gilmore, Liberty, MO, along with her 2 grandchildren Jace Gilmore, Beijing, China and Andrea Gilmore, Springfield, MO. She also leaves behind beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and relatives, many of who reside in her loved birth state of Nebraska. A private family service and burial will be held for Esther.
