Emma “Jean” Burgess, 101, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away May 16, 2024. A Celebration of Jean’s wonderful life will be held at 11:00am, Monday, May 20th at Church-Archer-Pasley Funeral Home, 119 E. Franklin St., Liberty, MO 64068. A visitation will begin at 10:30am at the funeral home. Inurnment will occur at Fairview & New Hope Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Daughters of Antioch Community Church, 4805 NE Antioch Rd, Kansas City, MO 64119.
Jean was born September 27, 1922 in Liberty, MO to Charles “Woody” Woods and Emma Matilda Thomas. She graduated from Liberty High School. Jean was joined in marriage to Harry Burgess in 1944 and they raised their family in the Liberty area. She worked in the trucking industry for many years, retiring from Wagner Cartage at the age of 62.
Jean was an active member of Antioch Community Church. She was a humble woman, but always active. Jean loved spending time outdoors gardening. She was creative, loved quilting, crochet, and sewing. Jean made all of her own clothes, as well as gifts of teddy bears and pillows for local hospitals. She was known for her canned pickles, zucchini bread, and enjoyed sipping a Bloody Mary on Sunday to relax.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harry Burgess; her sons, Ron Burgess, and Terry Burgess; her siblings, Jack, Lou, Pauleen, Colleen, and Bill Lee.
Jean is survived by her daughter, Susan Amberson (and her husband Frank); two granddaughters, Stace Hyder (Mike), and Terri Borden-Hamp (Tony); two grandsons, Rob Burgess, and Scott Burgess; six great-grandchildren, Blake, Logan (Jordyn), Max, Cage, Caleb, and Trinity; sisters-in-law, Janet Sterling, and Irene Bauer; brother-in-law, Bob Burgess (Shelley); Scott, Brett (Diana), and Jason Amberson and their families, as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
