Thomas “Tom” O’Neill was born October 5, 1946 in Kansas City and passed November 11, 2020 from COVID-19. Tom served in the Air Force for 38 years and retired in 2001 as a Master Sergeant. He first worked as a mechanic on C130’s at Richards Gebaur Air Base and then as a jet engine mechanic on the A10 Warthog at Whiteman AFB during his military career. After retirement from the Air Force Tom couldn’t sit still and decided to go back to work, he worked for 18 more years part-time at the Manheim Auto Auction as driver. Tom was an avid outdoorsman: He was a deer and turkey hunting, trot line fishing, bonfire starting, garage sale seeking, bourbon drinking ball of fun. Tom had never met a stranger and because of that he was loved by too many to count and will be missed by all. Tom leaves behind his wife Mitzie O’Neill of 49 years, his daughter Keri Hutchinson and husband Todd, his son Ryan O’Neill and wife Dawn, three grandchildren Preston, Hayden, and Haley (his grandchildren were his pride and joy). He also leaves behind a sister, Patricia Hobson, a brother, William O’Neill, and numerous nieces and nephews. Tom is proceeded in death by his parents, William “Bill” O’Neill and Dorthy Fitzsimmons O’Neill.

I knew Tom from spending time at Truman Lake. He was so incredibly friendly and always remembered details about you. I’m so incredibly sad to hear of his passing. Thinking of Mitzy and the family.

I worked with Tom for over 20 years at Richards-Gebaur and Whiteman AFB's with the 442 Fighter Wing. We were both full time Air Reserve Techs. Tom was a great aircraft and jet engine mechanic.

He was also a great mentor for our traditional reservists, providing important on the job training. Tom was likely involved in 150 + TF-34 jet engine overhauls. There were many ground test cell max power runs of these engines, required after maintenance had been completed, which Tom participated in.

If there was something you needed help with, Tom was always there for you.

My condolences to the O'Neill family.

I don't think Tom ever knew this, but he was at Sutherlands one day getting lumber and tied it down to his car (this was years ago or it would have been his truck) and when he was finished he realized he had tied the doors shut...my parents were there and saw him crawl through the window to leave. My Mom said she will never forget that.

I will miss driving by and seeing him out on his riding mower. I must have seen him just days before he went into the hospital out on Southview mulching up the leaves in the street. Gone way too soon. Our condolences to your family, he will be dearly missed.
