Anne Houck Norris, of Boone, North Carolina, and formerly of Julian, North Carolina, age 93, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2026 in Boone, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, strength and devotion to her family.
Anne was born on October 19, 1932 to Sarah A. Houck. She grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of Boone, North Carolina during the great depression. Life was not an easy one, but the hardships she endured helped shape her into the strong, resilient and compassionate woman she became. Through those struggles, she learned the value of hard work, the importance of family, and the power of faith in the Lord. Though many struggles came her way, she excelled and became a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), which she worked in for many years. She started her career in the “old” hospital in Boone, (the building now houses Founders Hall and other offices of ASU), and continued her career in several area hospitals in Greensboro.
Anne was a very crafty and talented woman who found joy in creating things with her hands. She especially loved to crochet and was a tremendous part of The Prayer Shawl group, using her talents to create beautiful shawls that brought comfort, warmth and love to others. She also made Crismons for her church and friends, sharing her faith through the beauty of her handmade creations. Anyone who knew Anne knew she had the patience of Job when it came to teaching someone to crochet. She was willing to guide others, even if the stitches didn’t always cooperate. Her gifts were more than just crafts – they were expressions of her generous heart and her love for the Lord and others.
Anne was a devoted wife to her beloved husband, Bobby Joe Norris, and a very loving mother to her two children, Pam and Scott. Her love for her family was unwavering and she dedicated her life to caring for those she loved. She was very devoted to her special son, Scott. Her love, care and commitment to him were a beautiful reflection of the selfless heart she carried throughout her life including her continuous care of her mother until her death at age 99 in 1996.
Anne was a very proud Nana to her one and only grandchild, Anne who always held a special place in her heart.
Anne loved the Lord. Her faith was the foundation of her life, and she prayed daily, trusting in God through both the joys and the hardships she experienced. Her faith was not simply something she talked about but something she lived every day. Anne was faithful to the area churches in Greensboro where she attended, beginning with State Street Church of God and later Mount Pleasant Methodist Church in Kimesville.
Anne cared for everyone in the community and fed them – she was always one of the first ones to bring food when anybody had surgery or a death in the family.
She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Norris Moretz & husband, David, her granddaughter, Anne Moretz Hamby and husband, Dwayne. Also surviving are her cousin, Jewel Parker Lewis and husband, Carl; her brother-in-law, Mike Norris and wife, Marie; her nieces, Kendall LaBrutto and husband, Cam, Kinsay Norris Sand and husband, Matt, Anita Chappell, Debbie Wilson and husband, Pete, Mitzi Matheson; and many great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Joe Norris; son, Scott Bradley Norris; mother, Sarah A. Houck; mother-in-law, Myrtle G. Norris; sister-in-law, Georgia Gail Matheson; brother-in-law, Hubert Matheson, brother-in-law, G. C. Norris; sister-in-law, Martha W. Norris; nephew-in-law, Ben Chappell; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and other family.
Anne took on a tremendous responsibility when she married Bobby Joe, taking on the role of instant “Mama” to a daughter that was about 5 years old, and she loved that daughter as if she were her very own. She once gave her daughter a little laminated saying (which her daughter still has) that says: “Not flesh of my flesh, nor bone of my bone, But still miraculously my own. Never forget for a single minute You didn’t grow under my heart but in it.” She was a great Mama to her daughter.
Anne lived a life marked by perseverance, kindness, laughter and a deep love for her family. Though her life was not without struggles, she continued to give love, show strength, and find comfort in her faith. The example she set and the memories she leaves behind will forever be treasured by those who knew and loved her.
