

Mr. Baker was a true American hero. He served our country in World War II as Sergeant with I-Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division in the United States Marine Corps. He served in the South Pacific (Guadalcanal, Samoa, New Guinea and Australia) and fought in many battles including Bloody Ridge, Tenaru River, Yellow Beach, Kokabona and Henderson Field among many others. A graveside funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 9th at 11:00 a.m. at Richland Gospel Church, officiated by Rev. Jeff Dodson. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at Loflin Funeral Home of Liberty, 212 West Swannanoa Avenue, Liberty, NC 27298.
He is the son of the late Samuel and Molly Oakley Baker and was also preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Elizabeth Cannon Baker; three sisters and four brothers.
Surviving is his daughter, Mary Ellen Sico (Vito) of Liberty; sons, Edward Joseph Baker (Joyce) of Stroudsburg, PA and Hugh Baker of Marathon, FL; sister, Mae Baker Whitten of McLeansville; grandchildren, Vincent Sico (Kathleen), David Baker (Dara), Christopher Baker (Gretchen), and Troy Wallace, and three great-grandchildren.
