

Garland loved singing and was well known for his Elvis Presley voice when he sang at the Rand Ole Opry in Liberty. He owned and operated the Ice Cream Shop in downtown Liberty for several years.
He was the son of the late Harvey Cime Smith and Ora Mae Terrell Smith and was also preceded in death by sisters, Inez Robertson and Elva Joyce; brothers, Edward Smith, Odell Smith and Paul Smith; step-daughter, Tammy Demick; and step-granddaughter, Miranda Duffy.
Surviving is his wife of 17 years, Jean Carol Strickland Smith; daughter, Tammy Jo Smith (Eddie Evans); son, Dean Smith (Melany); step-children, Robert Haste (Donna), Theresa Keck, Johnny Bass, Brandy Jackson (Joseph Carter); twin sister, Christine Holden (Gerry); granddaughter, Regan Smith Baldwin; step-grandchildren, Melissa Johnson, Jesse Haste, Nicholas Haste, Alyssa Haste, Trinity Knorr, Yazzie Tubiolo, Calli Jackson, Tamatha Duffy, Brandon Tavares and Eddie Ray Evans.
The family will receive friends for a time of visitation on Sunday, July 13, 2025 from 2:00 until 2:45 p.m. at Loflin Funeral Home, 212 W. Swannanoa Avenue, Liberty, NC. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, July 13, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. at The Loflin Funeral Home Chapel.
