Homer “Pawpaw” Black, 83, of Liberty met his heavenly father on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at the Hospice Home of Alamance-Caswell. He was born on November 2, 1929 to the late Kivett and Verdie Swing Black. He graduated from Nathanael Greene School and was a lifelong member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in Kimesville. He retired from Beamon Corporation in May of 1995 after 30 years of service. After a short break from working, he became a wonderful grandfather and started his new career as being a taxi, baby sitter, avid sports spectator, and entertainer for his grandchildren.

He was a loving husband, father and “Pawpaw”. He enjoyed watching the grandkids play sports, camping and taking beach trips with the family. He thought there was nothing more special than his 4 grandkids who he loved dearly.

Surviving is his wife of 55 years, Virginia Southern Black; two daughters, Sheila Black Ervin and Carol Black Underwood; two grandsons, Jonathan and Cameron Ervin and two granddaughters, April and Erica Underwood, “adopted grandson”, Alex Cheek; brother-in-law, Cecil Jones; a special friend, Billy Edwards and nieces and nephews.

Homer was preceded in death by his sister, Mildred Jones and his brother, Winfred Black.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 8 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, 4400 Alamance Church Road, Liberty officiated by Rev. Chuck Ireson; burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at Loflin Funeral Home of Liberty and other times at the home.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the caring staff at the Hospice Home of Alamance-Caswell for the wonderful care you gave to “Pawpaw” during his last days.

At the family’s request, memorial contribution may be made to the Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell, 918 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215 or Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, 4400 Alamance Church Road, Liberty, NC 27298.

To Sheila and Carol I am sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. You may or may not remember me. I am Mike Thompson, my mother was Nellie Thompson of Graham. My grandparents were Jesse and Bertha Swing. It's been over 20 years since my wife and I moved to Pender County, near Wilmington. I saw this obituary and instantly remembered your father. As a child we made several trips to Kimesville and that area to visit Verdie and Kive Black, and I remember seeing your parents and you guys as well. Of course my parents have been dead now since 1990 but I still miss them. You will miss your father but you have your memories. My wife and I will keep you all in our prayers. Remember me to your mother.
