Homer “Pawpaw” Black, 83, of Liberty met his heavenly father on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at the Hospice Home of Alamance-Caswell. He was born on November 2, 1929 to the late Kivett and Verdie Swing Black. He graduated from Nathanael Greene School and was a lifelong member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in Kimesville. He retired from Beamon Corporation in May of 1995 after 30 years of service. After a short break from working, he became a wonderful grandfather and started his new career as being a taxi, baby sitter, avid sports spectator, and entertainer for his grandchildren.
He was a loving husband, father and “Pawpaw”. He enjoyed watching the grandkids play sports, camping and taking beach trips with the family. He thought there was nothing more special than his 4 grandkids who he loved dearly.
Surviving is his wife of 55 years, Virginia Southern Black; two daughters, Sheila Black Ervin and Carol Black Underwood; two grandsons, Jonathan and Cameron Ervin and two granddaughters, April and Erica Underwood, “adopted grandson”, Alex Cheek; brother-in-law, Cecil Jones; a special friend, Billy Edwards and nieces and nephews.
Homer was preceded in death by his sister, Mildred Jones and his brother, Winfred Black.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 8 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, 4400 Alamance Church Road, Liberty officiated by Rev. Chuck Ireson; burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at Loflin Funeral Home of Liberty and other times at the home.
