

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at 11:00 am at The Loflin Funeral Home Chapel with visitation 1 hour prior to the service; officiating will be his former pastor, Rev. Benny Church and his former Sunday School teacher, Ronnie May; burial will follow at Gilmore Memorial Park in Julian.
Jim was born December 21, 1934 in Guilford County; was a lifelong farmer, retired from Troxler Hosiery with 27 years of service and also worked with Clint Lowes Fencing for several years.
Jim liked raising big gardens and sharing produce, especially cantaloupes with his neighbors and friends. He enjoyed bird and deer hunting with his sons and friends, going to the coast in the fall with his family and flounder gigging with his sons. He loved boating and water skiing and taught his sons to ski when they were very young. He was a member of Welkers Crossroads EMC Julian and served on the Board of Stewards and Trustees while attending. He loved the Lord and he loved his family. He was a doting grandfather to Jennifer, Michelle and Nicole.
Jim was the son of the late R. T. and Mamie Coble Layton and was also preceded in death by his brothers, Garland, W.D. and J.E. and
sister, Louise.
Surviving is his wife of 57 years, Ruby Bailey Layton; sons, James Richard ‘Richie” Layton, Jr. from Cove City, NC., Kenneth Gregory “Greg” Layton (Patricia) of Julian; granddaughters, Jennifer Layton of New Bern, NC, Michelle and Nicole Layton both of Julian; Great-grandsons, Shane and Braden Layton of New Bern; sisters, Fran Jessup of High Point, Ruby O’Briant of Randleman, Anne Lowe of Liberty, Thelma Caviness of Jacksonville, FL., Nellie Holt of
Greensboro and several nieces and nephews who were all
special to him.
The family thanks Jerry and Sue Roberts for all they have done. We thank Carol Hue, Anne Lowe, Danny and Sherry Murray, Angie McCarland, Geraldine Dent and the church family at Welkers EMC for food and support during this time.
The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro for the compassionate care he received. Special thanks to Jennifer, Ann, Regina and all the other ladies for their care and compassion and Chaplin Chris.
