James Vernon Pike, Sr., 89, of Liberty passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2025 at AuthoraCare Collective Beacon Place in Greensboro, NC. We grieve our loss but rejoice in the belief that he is now walking with God.
James was raised on the Pike family tobacco farm in Alamance County, the second child of nine. He was a member of The Liberty Ruritan Club where he served on the Board of Directors and as Club Secretary. James proudly served his country in the Army National Guard where he attained the rank of Sergeant and went on to serve in the US Army Reserves. After the service he began his career in furniture at Stout Furniture until their closing; and then went on to work at Michael Thomas Furniture until his retirement. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. James will be remembered for his kind and gentle nature and the love he had for his country.
He was the son of the late Kermit Taft and Elsie Smith Pike and was also preceded in death by his son, James Vernon Pike, Jr. "Jimmy"; sisters, Juanita Redding, Shirley Murray and Brenda Pike; brothers, Kermit Pike, Jr., Jerry Pike and Marshall Pike.
James is survived by his wife of 24 years, Carolyn Ferguson Pike; daughter, Michele Pike Smith and her husband, William "Keith"; daughter-in-law, Laura Pike; step-daughter, Karen Jackson; sisters, Barbara Kivett and her husband, Kenny and Nina Stout; seven grandchildren, Todd Pike, Jessica Pike, Chase Smith, Carson Smith, Zephen Bartolet, Zayna Bartolet and Brittany Morton; one great-grandchild, Leah Morton; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends for a time of visitation on Thursday, January 16, 2025 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Loflin Funeral Home of Liberty, 212 W. Swannanoa Avenue, Liberty, NC. A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 17, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Hickory Grove Traditional Methodist Church, 10068 Silk Hope Liberty Road, Siler City, NC; burial will follow in the church cemetery.
