

She was a native of Sampson County, where she was raised on a tobacco farm by parents who valued education. She earned an undergraduate degree in home economics from Greensboro College and taught for several years before earning a degree in math from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, and then a PhD in math education from Northwestern University. She was a professor at the University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg, until her retirement.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 7 at 3:00 PM at Pleasant Union United Methodist Church where she was a member, 5929 Coble Church Road, Liberty, with Rev. Keith Newell officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.
Nancy was the daughter of the late Lamb Gordon Casey and Arey Henley Lipe Casey and was also preceded in death by her infant daughter, Theresa Joyce Dunigan and son, Casey Steele Dunigan.
Surviving is her sister, Maymie Casey Causey of Liberty, as well as two nephews, Winfield (Jane) and Charles (Pam) Causey and their families.
At the family’s request, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pleasant Union United Methodist Church, Nancy Dunigan Memorial, 5929 Coble Church Road, Liberty, NC 27298.
