

Nellie graduated from EM Holt in 1959 and from Woman’s College (UNCG) in 1963 with her bachelor’s in elementary education. She taught at EM Yoder Elementary School in Mebane and at EM Holt Elementary School in Burlington until her children were born. A devoted wife and mother, she treasured her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Nellie was also an avid gardener who sold produce and crocheted goods at the Greensboro Farmers Curb Market and worked diligently canning hundreds of quarts of vegetables each year. She served as caregiver to her parents and aunt, was a good listener, and helped many people. Nellie enjoyed crocheting, sewing, and crafting. She also taught Sunday School, led women’s Bible studies, and was a group leader for Bible Study Fellowship. She and David were active at Shannon Hills Bible Chapel in Greensboro.
She was the daughter of the late Roy and Marsell Crouse Coble; and was also preceded in death by her husband of 58 1/2 years, David Ray Jones.
Surviving are her 4 children, Elizabeth Gibbs (Thomas), Lisa Pennington (Jeff), Gary Jones (Lisa), Gina Burgess (Wade); 27 grandchildren, Gibbs - Jennifer Barnhardt (Jacob), Joshua (Addie), Jessica, Jonathan (Brooke), Jeremiah; Pennington - Davis (Emily), Heather Hylton (Ben), Caleb (Taylor), Andrew (Susie), Julia, Ella; Jones - Lucas (Abi), Marly O'Neil (Rob), Shiloh (Courtney), Leeson, Silas; Burgess - Emily Rydmark (Seth), Benjamin, Daniel (Ashley), Timothy, Rebecca, Matthew, Joseph, Gelina, Kendra, Seth, Lydia;16 great-grandchildren; and brother, Jim Coble.
The family will receive friends for a time of visitation on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, from 12:30 until 1:45 pm at Mt Zion Baptist Church, 3572 W. Greensboro Chapel Hill Road, Liberty, NC. The funeral will follow at 2:00 pm with burial afterward in the church cemetery. Services will be conducted by Mark Shelley and Ronnie Murdock of Shannon Hills Bible Chapel, and by Thomas Gibbs, son-in-law.
The family would like to thank AuthoraCare Hospice for their services and kindnesses, Mt. Zion Baptist Church for their help and use of their facilities, and both Shannon Hills Bible Chapel and Antioch Community Church for their prayer support and practical help over the past few years.
