Rachel Crutchfield Perry left for the heavenly home on Monday, August 24, 2015, surrounded by her family in her home, as she desired. She was born on Christmas Eve, 1928 in Chatham County to the late John Clyde and Vallie Cook Crutchfield. She is preceded in death by her brothers, Levotis, Talton, June, and Everette; and sisters, Lillian, Mildred, Ruth, and Polly.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 26, 2015. A graveside celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2015 at Fairview Cemetery in Liberty, North Carolina.
Rachel leaves behind her soulmate and devote husband of 68 years, Edward Lewis Perry, daughter, Marsha Rosenthal (Gideon) of Greensboro; son, Thomas E. Perry (Dannie) of Asheboro, and cherished grandchildren, Dr. Martin Rosenthal of Jacksonville, Florida, namesake, Rachel R. Gell (Michael) of Charlotte ; step-granddaughter, Crystal Hudson of Asheboro; great grandson, Parks, and sister, Peggy Smith.
Rachel was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Liberty and a former member of the Women’s Circle and volunteer with the community Bargain Box. Rachel loved bluegrass music, a loved she shared with special friends/bluegrass musicians, the Jobes at Mebane.
Family was always central in her life. She was our “glue”. Her talents as a seamstress quilter, crafter, and baker were exemplified by the many quilts, wall-hangings, hand painted Christmas cards and baked goods she so lovingly made for her family. Caramel and coconut cakes, persimmon pudding and especially her sourdough rolls were much anticipated holiday treats. Each member of the family could always expect a Happy Birthday song sang over the telephone. We’ll always miss that sweet voice.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials are made to the First United Methodist Church of Liberty, 123 North Fayetteville Street, Liberty, North Carolina 27298 or Hospice and palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, North Carolina 27401.
A special thank you to the caring staff of Hospice, especially Roberta and Teresa and to the caregivers of Home Instead Senior Care, who made it possible to honor Rachel’s wishes to remain at home. Rachel will always be remembered as the most wonderful wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friends. Everyone that knew her was touched by her and will always miss her.
